A.lizard, acc. to Hdt.2.69, etc.; κ. τριπήχεες χερσαῖοι, of the desert monitor, genus Varanus, Id.4.192; of other lizards, Arist.Fr.362, LXX Le.11.30, Ael.NA1.58; κ. μικρός, in a fountain at Chalcedon, Str.12.4.2; cf. κροκύδιλος Hippon.119 (-δειλ- Eust.; κρεκύδειλος Et.Gen.in Indogerm.Forsch.15.7).
2. crocodile found in the Nile, Hdt.2.68 sq.; also in Indian rivers, Id.4.44, cf. Ael.NA12.41; “ὁ κ. ὁ ποτάμιος” Arist.HA492b24, cf. 558a18. (Correctly written κροκόδιλος PCair.Zen.354.13, 443.4 (iii B. C.), PTeb.63.25 (ii B. C.), etc.; later κροκό-δειλος PAmh.2.45.8 (ii B. C.), etc., freq. in codd.; κορκόδιλος PCair.Zen.379.5 (iii B.
