χάσκω Root ΧΑ or ΧΑΝ

I.Lat. hio, to yawn, gape, τότε μοι χάνοι εὐρεῖα χθών then may earth yawn for me, i. e. to swallow me, Il.; πρὸς κῦμα χανών, of one drowning, Od.
2.to gape (in eager expectation), χάσκοντες κούφαις ἐλπίσι τερπόμεθα Solon; ὅτε δὴ 'κεχήνη when I was all agape, Ar.; so, πρὸς ταῦτα κεχηνώς id=Ar.; κεχηνότες gaping fools, id=Ar.
3.to yawn (from weariness, ennui, or inattention), id=Ar.
II.more rarely, to speak with open mouth, to utter, Lat. hisco, c. acc., τὰ δεινὰ ῥήματα χανεῖν; Soph.; τοῦτ᾽ ἐτόλμησεν χανεῖν; Ar. Hence
