Penēus

Πηνειός).
1.
Now the Salambria; the principal river in Thessaly, rising in Mount Lacmon; after receiving
the waters of the Enipeus, Lethaeus, and Titaresius rivers, it passes through the Vale of
Tempé between Mounts Ossa and Olympus, and empties into the sea. (See
Tempé.) The rivergod Peneus was the son of
Oceanus and Tethys (
Theog. 343). By the Naiad Creüsa he became the
father of Hypseus, Stilbé, and Daphné. He was also the father (by some
called the husband) of Cyrené.
