Sarpēdon

（Σαρπήδων).

The son of Zeus and Europa, and brother of Minos and Rhadamanthus. Being involved in a quarrel with Minos about Miletus, he took refuge with Cilix, whom he assisted against the Lycians. He afterwards became king of the Lycians, and Zeus granted him the privilege of living three generations (Herod.i. 173; Apollod. iii.1.2).

Son of Zeus and Laodamia, or, according to others, of Evander and Deïdamia, and a brother of Clarus and Themon. He was a Lycian prince, and a grandson of the preceding. In the Trojan War he was an ally of the Trojans, and distinguished himself by his valour, but was slain by Patroclus ( Il. v. 475; xii. 292; xvi. 480). Apollo, by the command of Zeus, cleansed Sarpedon's body from blood and dust, covered it with ambrosia, and gave it to Sleep and Death to carry into Lycia, there to be honourably buried ( Il. xvi. 667).
