Μέλας a river flowing into lake Kopais in Boeotia; its reed beds were famous for producing flutes. “πρόσθα μὲν ἲς Ἀχελωίου τὸν ἀοιδότατον Εὐρωπία κράνα Μέλ[ανό]ς τε ῥοαὶ τρέφον κάλαμον” (supp. Wil.: “τε ποταμοῦ ῥοαὶ Π”: “ποταμοῦ” del. Wil. ut glossema) fr. 70. 2.
