ἀναμάξεις (fig. from the custom of murderers wiping off
the bloody weapon upon the head of the slain, as if to divert their
guilt upon the victim himself; hence, here = ‘shalt atone
for with thine own life’ (cf. Od.
22.218), Od.
19.92†.
