Nicholson, Samuel 1743-1813

Naval officer; born in Maryland in 1743; brother of Capt. James Nicholson, was a lieutenant under John Paul Jones in the famous battle of the Bon Homme Richard with the Serapis, and was made captain immediately afterwards. He cruised in the Deane, thirty-two guns, successfully. After the reorganization of the navy in 1794 he was appointed captain, and was the first commander of the frigate Constitution. He died in Charlestown, Mass., Dec. 29, 1813.
