Surratt, John H.

alleged conspirator, son of Mrs. Mary E. Surratt, who was hanged for complicity in the assassination of President Lincoln. After the fatal shot was fired, April 14, 1865, Surratt escaped to Canada and thence to [485] England; travelled over Europe; and finally joined the Papal Zouaves. Later he deserted and went to Egypt, where he was apprehended in 1867 and taken back to Washington. His trial for conspiracy occupied two months, and ended in a disagreement of the jury.
