Canadians do not respond with alacrity to the appeal of their Yankee neighbors for ‘"aid and comfort."’ They scout the idea of their recruiting in that quarter, and in response gently remind the adherents of the
United States of a certain recruiting event on their side of the line during the Crimean war.
The Montreal
Gazette has the following on the secession of
Virginia:

"The further news seems to indicate that the old and important
State of Virginia has seceded.
If this proves true we fancy
all is over with the United States of America. If the
South is thoroughly in earnest,
it cannot be conquered by the North."
