Double-Barrelled shot guns.
--The suggestion so often made, that the arm above named would prove a formidable weapon of defence and offence against the
Yankee Invaders, seems to have been conceived in reason.-- While the
Confederate States have an abundance of weapons for many more men than they have in the field, it is gratifying to know that there are so many guns in the hands of the people that could be used if a necessity should arise.
Should it become necessary for us to double or quadruple the number of our soldiers in the field, the adaptation of an arm already in our possession in great numbers, and with the use of which our people are familiar, would be very desirable.
The large double-barrel buck-shot gun is a most formidable weapon, and in close encounters much more certain and destructive than the musket.
All that is needed to adapt it to the field service is a bayonet, with which, having the advantage of two loads at command, and the deadly range of some fifteen large shot to the barrel, in guerilla surprises, in close-line firing, cavalry pursuits, or even the charge of columns, it would be a much more effective weapon than the musket or rifle.
Governor Wise, in calling out his Brigade, especially enjoined on the men if they could not get the regular weapon, to come with anything they could get. The result is that he has a large body of efficacity armed men.
