A Repentant Politician.

--Mr. Fernando Wood lately delivered a speech in favor of peace in the Federal House of Representatives. On being charged with assisting in the organization of the Mozart regiment in the beginning of the war, he replied that he did so for the defence of Washington, and not for the purpose of waging war against the South; and, upon a member observing that the Mozart regiment was intended for service in the South, Mr. Wood said: ‘"If it is true that I raised so many men for such deeds of blood, may Almighty God forgive me for the sin and crime! "’ This remark was loudly hissed by the Republican members.
