The Young Men's Christian Association has recently made an earnest appeal for assistance to the wives and children of soldiers now in the field. It is recommended that collections be made for this purpose in the various churches on the approaching Fast Day. The people ought to give them, and give liberally. Let no man make any half-way business of the sum bestowed on that day. It is the best opportunity of doing a good, a just, a necessary act that any man will ever have. Gratitude, mercy, humanity, the love of God, the love of country, all call upon every human being to open his hand and his heart on that day, and to give every dollar that he is able on Friday next. No man ought to think in this war of retaining, for his own use, a single cent above the actual necessities of the support of his family. All things should be in common, as in the early days of Christianity, if we expect to emerge, in honor and safety, from these fiery tribulations.
