1. in music, execution of a rapid passage of melody, esp. one consisting of florid phrases or runs 1H4 III. i. 210 “ditties . . . Sung . . . With ravishing , to her lute,” Rom. III. v. 29 “the lark makes sweet ” ; (hence fig.) variation, modulation Mac. IV. iii. 96 “abound In the of each several crime, Acting it many ways.”
2. definite portion of a battalion or squadron 2H4 I. iii. 70 “his d-s . . . Are in three heads” ; cf. Oth. I. i. 23 “the division of a battle.”
