belly amphora
A neckless amphora with a smooth, continuous curve from the neck through the body. Also known as a one-piece amphora. Shape: There are three types of belly amphorae, each distinguished by certain details: Type A (illustrated here), Type B, and Type C. (See individual articles on each type.) History: The one-piece amphora is a seventh century innovation. It was one of the leading vase shapes in Attica fin the sixth century. All three types appear in black-figure, and both Type A and Type C enjoy great popularity with red-figure artists. The Nessos Painter may have been the first to apply the Protoattic decorative scheme of the the picture panel to the belly amphora. By 600 B.C. this scheme is well established; it dies out in the last quarter of the fifth century B.C.
