οἴμοι , exclam. of pain, fright, pity, anger, grief, also of surprise, prop. οἴ μοι
A.ah me ! woe's me ! first in Thgn. and Trag. (v. infr.) (in Hom. always μοι) ; “οἴμ᾽ ὡς τεθνήξειςAr.Ach.590 ; and Com., “οἴμ᾽ ὡς ἥδομαιId.Nu.773 : mostly abs., or with a nom., οἴ. ἐγὼ σοῦ μέλεος cj. in S.Tr.971 (lyr.) ; “οἴ. δείλαιοςAr.Eq.139 : ironical, οἴ., καταύδα oh ! denounce it, S.Ant.86 : sts. c. gen. causae, “οἴ. ἀναλκείηςThgn. 891 ; “οἴ. φρενὸς σῆςE.Hipp.1454 ; “οἴ. ταλαίνης συμφορᾶςS.El.1179 ; “οἴμοι μοιAr.Pax257 (really οἰμοιμοῖ acc. to A.D.Adv.177.3) :—the forms ᾤμοι and ὤμοι are freq. found in codd., as of S.Tr.l.c.,Aj. 980, OC202 (lyr.), etc.; ὤμοι is acknowledged by A.D.Adv.126.27. (οἴμοι may become οἴμ᾽ by elision in Trag. and Com. before “ὡς, οἴμ᾽ ὡς ἔοικας ὀρθὰ μαρτυρεῖνS.Aj.354, cf. Ant.320,1270, Ar.ll.cc., Cratin. 183 : freq. written οἴμμοι in codd. of LXX.
