Xenŏphon
Of Ephesus, a writer of prose fiction, as to whose date and personality nothing is known.
His remaining work is entitled
Ephesiaca, or the Loves of Anthia and Abrocomas
(
Ἐφεσιακὰ, τὰ κατὰ Ἀνθίαν καὶ Ἀβροκόμην). The
style of the work is simple, and the story is conducted without confusion, notwithstanding the
number of personages introduced; but the adventures are of a very improbable kind. Xenophon
was possibly the oldest of the Greek romance writers. Editions of his work are those by
Peerlkamp
(Haarlem, 1818); and by Passow
(Leipzig, 1833). See
