Incident of the
White House.--On the occupation of the
White House,
Va., by the soldiers of
Gen. McClellan, May twelfth, 1862, a small piece of paper, bearing the following inscription, was found pinned on the casing of an inner door:
Northern soldiers, who profess to reverence Washington, forbear to desecrate the house of his first married life, the property of his wife, now owned by her descendants.
A grand-daughter of Mrs. Washington.
Beneath the inscription was written the following:
lady: A Northern officer has protected your property in sight of the enemy, and at the request of your overseer.
