Stuart, Alexander Hugh Holmes 1807-1891

Statesman; born in Staunton, Va., April 2, 1807; graduated at the University of Virginia in 1828; member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1836-38 and of Congress in 1841-43. He was appointed Secretary of the Interior in 1850, and held that post till 1853; opposed the secession of Virginia till the outbreak of hostilities; was elected to Congress in 1865, but was not seated. In 1868 he originated “the new movement” of the “committee of nine,” through which his State was freed of military rule. He died in Staunton, Va., Feb. 12, 1891.
