Wood, James 1750-1813

Governor; born in 1750; was made a captain of Virginia troops in 1774; went on a mission to the western Indians in 1775 with only one companion, and displayed so much courage that he greatly pleased the Indians, and effected his object; promoted colonel in November, 1776. After Burgoyne's army was quartered at Charlottesville, Va., in 1781, he was given command of that place; and was governor of Virginia in 1796-99. He died in Olney, Va., July 16, 1813. [438]
