Kelley, William Darrah 1814-1890
Legislator; born in Philadelphia, Pa., April 12, 1814; admitted to the bar in 1841; was a Freetrade Democrat till 1848, when he entered the Republican party, becoming a firm abolitionist and protectionist.
He was elected to Congress in 1860, and held a seat in that body for many years.
He was the author of Slavery in the Territories (an address); Address at the colored Department of the House of refuge; Reasons for abandoning the theory of free-trade and adopting the principle of protection to American industry; Letters on industrial and financial questions; The New South, etc. He died in Washington, D. C., Jan. 9, 1890.
