Run campaign a sharp fight took place at Locust Grove, Va., in which Carr's (3d) Division sustained considerable loss, the principal part of t was still in command of the corps, with Generals Birney, Prince and Carr in command of the divisions. Upon the return from Mine Run, the cors Salomon and Thayer, with a cavalry division attached, under General E. A. Carr. The corps was continued in service until the close of the wcomposed of the four divisions of Osterhaus, A. J. Smith, Hovey, and Carr; these were also known, respectively, as the Ninth, Tenth, Twelfth, ssing; total, 279, the bulk of which occurred in Lawler's Brigade of Carr's Division. In the first assault on Vicksburg, May 19th, the corps my to Jackson, Miss., and assisted in the investment of that place. Carr's Division at this time was commanded by General William P.
