columns, and particularly so when it refers to so gallant a corps as the 5th South Carolina Volunteers, for we have fought with them, and know, as a soldier, exactly what they feel. It would appear that the 5th South Carolina and 1st South Carolina Sharpshooters are not identical, although frequently informed to that effect, and the discrepancy is explained in an extract from a soldier's letter, thus: "The 5th South Carolina regiment was commanded up to the 14th of April by Col. M. Jenkins, at which time he took command of a newly re- enlisted organization, known now by the name of the 1st Palmetto Sharpshooters. The present 5th is composed of companies of the 4th, 5th and other regiments of Gen. B. H. Anderson's brigade, and was organized on the 28d of April. J. R. R. Giles was the Colonel, and fall in the battle of Saturday, while hly making the third charge upon the enemy.
