As soon as Mr. Smith was apprised of the mysterious disappearance of his property, be procured the services of Constable E. W. Robinson, of Henrico county, to ferret out the matter; whereupon that officer went earnestly to work, and, suspecting the guilty parties, laid his plans for their capture. Procuring the assistance of a few of his neighbors, he sallied out, afteramed James Williams, and he himself is also considered to be a deserter. There were also found upon Lee's premises six barrels of corn and other goods, supposed to be stolen; all of which, together with the timber found, was hauled away by Constable Robinson to a place of safety. It is said that these marauders were engaged several nights in taking down Smith's house, and that they were supplied with wagons, axes, and everything else necessary to enable them, to carry on their operations.
