IX: George Bancroft
George Bancroft, who died in Washington, D. C., on January 17, 1891, was born at Worcester, Massachusetts, October 3, 1800, being the son of Aaron and Lucretia (Chandler) Bancroft.
His first American ancestor in the male line was John Bancroft, who came to this country from England, arriving on June 12, 1632, and settling at Lynn, Massachusetts.
There is no evidence of any especial literary or scholarly tastes in his early ancestors, although one at least among them became a subject for literature, being the hero of one of Cotton Mather's wonderful tales of recovery from smallpox.
Samuel Bancroft, grandfather of the great historian, was a man in public station, and is described by Savage as possessing the gift of utterance in an eminent degree ; and the historian's father, Rev. Aaron Bancroft, D. D., was a man of mark.
