Joseph Davis (search for this): article 5
Runaway--fifty dollars reward. --Runaway, on the 5th of August, my Negro Woman, named Betty; about 28 years old, five feet four inches high, black, who was hired to Joseph Davis, on Broad street. She has a mark on the face, in consequence of a mustard plaster she had on, which place is darker.--She has children in Cumberland county, where I bought her of Mr. J. M. Price. She is probably in this city, or has made her way to Mr. Price's. I will give the above reward, if delivered to me here or if lodged in jail in the county or city. oc 7--1m* Joseph Stern.

f famous British poets — are rapidly assuming the appearance of dissolving views. What were intended to be memorials of art in future ages are vanishing within a decade. The figures representing English rivers seem very characteristically to be done in water colors. Marmion and Lara are apparently in an advanced stage of decomposition. The Red Cross Knight has got a few scratches from the dragon. One of the amiable daughters of Lear has an eruption on her neck, and the old gentleman himself and the rest of the family are apparently suffering either from skin disease or yellow fever. The spear of 1thuriel has not only touched Satan while suggesting evil dreams to Eve, but has left his mark behind. A slight puncture on the neck of Adam would suggest the idea that he also got a poke from the same weapon. St. Cecilia is losing her complexion and looks more angelic, but it is a beauty that will prove evanescent, and twelve months hence she may be as disfigured as her neighbors.

The artists by whom they were painted must feel a little bewildered now on viewing their handiwork.--Those frescoes — illustrative of passages in the writings of famous British poets — are rapidly assuming the appearance of dissolving views. what the enemy have been aiming to effect by every artifice and the grossest misrepresentations, I mean an opinion of our enmity towards them, and of the cruel treatment they experience when they fall into our hands; a prejudice which we on our part have heretofore thought it politic to suppress and to root out by every act of lenity and kindness."--Vol. III., page 18. "In no part of the war old Washington more thoroughly evince that magnanimity which was his grand characteristic, than in the last scenes of this campaign, (1777,) when he arose above the tauntings of the press, the sneering of the cabal, the murmurs of the public, the suggestions of some of his friends, and the throbbing impulse of his own courageous heart and adhered to that Fabian policy which he considered essential to the safety of the cause. To dare is often the impulse of selfish ambition, or harebrained valor; to forbear, is at times the proof of real greatness."--III. Vol. Washington's Life page 314.
