Some, however, including Mr Craig, understand ‘your own action in making him joint commander.’ It might possibly also refer to Coriolanus, who owned his position to Aufidius, and this would agree better with the passage from Ant. & Cleo. cited above. In this case ‘darken'd’ would be best rendered by ‘eclips'd,’ cast into the shade.
