A.fixed up to the middle, μεσσοπαγὲς δ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἔθηκε κατ᾽ ὄχθης μείλινον ἔγχος drove it in up to the middle, Il.21.172:—Aristarch. preferred the v.l. μεσσοπαλές , quivering up to the middle (cf. Hsch.); but it is doubtful whether -παλές could mean quivering, and μεσσοπαγής is found in late Poets, as Nonn.D.1.233.
