A.from the quarter of the north wind, northern, opp “νότιος, θάλασσα” Hdt. 4.37, 6.31; β. ἀκτά exposed to the north, S.l.c.; “τὸ β. τεῖχος” Ar.Fr.556, And.3.5, Pl.R.439e; τῆς Πλειάδος βορείου γενομένης having appeared in the north, Arist.H A542b11.
2. of the north wind, β. χειμών a winter during which northerly winds prevail, Hp.Aph.3.11, Arist.Pr. 859b21; ἔαρ ib.860a13; βόρεια, τά, northerly winds, ib.944a1, etc. (rarely in sg., Ar.V.265; “ὅταν ᾖ βόρειον” X.Cyn.8.1); βορείοις in the time of northerly winds, Arist.H A574a1, al.; βορείων ὄντων ib.592a14: Comp. “-ότερος” Arat. 247, Alex.Aphr.in Metaph.446.34: Sup. “-ότατος” Man.4.241.
