A.throat, gullet, in Hom. always of men, “βάλε δουρὶ λαιμὸν ὑπ᾽ ἀνθερεῶναIl.13.388; “τὸν δ᾽ Ὀδυσεὺς κατὰ λαιμὸν . . βάλεν ἰῷOd.22.15; “οὔ πως ἂν ἔμοιγε φίλον κατὰ λαιμὸν ἰείη οὐ πόσις οὐδὲ βρῶσιςIl.19.209; “λ. ἀπαμήσειε18.34: metaph., neck of a bottle, AP 9.232 (Phil.): also in pl., E.Ph.1092; so of animals, Id.Supp.1201, Ar.Av.1560.—Rare in early Prose, as Hp.Cord.2, but commoner later, as Luc.Nigr.16, Gal.15.656, Porph.Marc.33, Jul.Or.6.193b.
