II. commonly of persons,
1. clasp to one's bosom, embrace, “πατέραOd.11.451, E.Ba. 1319, cf. Theoc.3.19, Luc.DDeor.7.3, etc.; στόμα γε σὸν προσπτύξομαι will press it to my lips, E.Ph.1671, cf. Med.1400(anap.):—Pass., c. dat., cling to, “παρθένῳ προσπτύσσεταιS.Ant.1237.
2. metaph., greet warmly, welcome, τινα Od.8.478: c. dupl. acc., π. τινά τι address a friendly greeting to one, “ὄφρα τί μιν -πτύξομαι17.509; οὐδέ τιν᾽ οὔτ᾽ ἔπεϊ προσπτύσσετο οὔτε τι ἔργῳ greeted no one either with word or gesture, h.Cer.199; π. μύθῳ entreat warmly, importune, Od. 2.77, 4.647.
3. θεῶν δαῖτας προσπτύσσεσθαι welcome the feasts of the gods, i.e. honour or celebrate them, Pi. l.c.—Poet. and late Prose.
