A.narrow, close, or confined space, ἐν ς. Od.22.460; “στεῖνος ὁδοῦ κοίλης” Il.23.419; of the Isthmus of Corinth, Call.Sos. vi 5.
II. generally, straits, distress, “στείνει ἐν αἰνοτάτῳ” Il.8.476; “μάχης ἐν ς. τῷδε” 15.426; “πόνοι καὶ στείνεα” h.Ap.533; στένος in A., σωφρονεῖν ὑπὸ στένει to learn wisdom by suffering, Eu.521 (lyr.).
