Melissus

Μέλισσος).
1.
A Samian philosopher of Eleatic tendencies. He is probably not the person who commanded the
fleet opposed to Pericles in B.C. 440, but of earlier date. Only fragments of his work
remain.
2.
A Latin grammarian and comic poet, the freedman of Maecenas. Augustus intrusted him with
the arrangement of a library in the portico of Octavia (
Gramm. 21).
