Memmius
The name of a Roman gens, which claimed descent from the Trojan Mnestheus.
1.
C. Memmius, tribune of the plebs B.C. 111, an ardent opponent of
the oligarchical party at Rome during the Jugurthine War. He was slain by the mob of
Saturninus and Glaucia while a candidate for the consulship in 100.
2.
C. Memmius Gemellus, tribune of the plebs in B.C. 66, curule
aedile in 60, and praetor in 58, was impeached for bribery, and withdrew from Rome to
Mitylené. Memmius married Fausta, a daughter of the dictator Sulla , by whom he
had a son. He was eminent both in literature and in eloquence, though profligate in his
private character. Lucretius dedicated to him his poem
De Reum Natura.
