BARATE
BARATE (
Βάραττα,
Βαράτη), on the road from Iconium (
Koniyeh) to Tyana, and 50 M. P. from Iconium. Hamilton found on his route |eastward from
Koniyeh, near
Kara Bounar, a remarkable trachytic crater, and there were in the neighbourhood several similar cones.
The distance on the map from
Koniyeh is more than 50 geographical miles.
He thinks that these Barathra are the Barata of the Tables, for “the name, which signifies ‘ deep pits,’ cannot well apply to anything else than these remarkable craters, which must have attracted the attention of the ancients.” (

The conjecture seems probable.
