Willard, Abijah 1722-1789

Military officer; born in Lancaster, Mass., in 1722; was made a “mandamus” councillor in 1774, which caused him to be an object of public opprobrium; was arrested in Union, Conn., but by signing a declaration made by his captors he was liberated. He was proscribed and exiled in 1778; was in New York City in July, 1783, and with fifty-four others petitioned Sir Guy Carleton for land grants in Nova Scotia. These petitioners were designated as the Fifty-Five. Willard later settled in New Brunswick. He died in Lancaster, New Brunswick, in 1789.
