[783] pursuits. He then began the study of medicine, entered Jefferson medical college in 1877; graduated from it in 1879, and began the practice at once in Anderson as the partner of Dr. W. H. Nardin, which partnership still exists. Dr. Orr at once found himself in possession of an active practice, which has steadily grown until it now extends over a considerable portion of upper South Carolina. He took a post-graduate course in 1892, in New York Polytechnic. He is president of the Anderson county medical society, a member of the American medical association, and of the board of medical examiners of South Carolina. He is also first vice-president of the South Carolina medical association, and was formerly lecturer on anatomy and physiology at Patrick military institute of Anderson. He is also surgeon of the Blue Ridge and the C. & W. C. railroads. He was married in October, 1875, to Miss Althea Allen, daughter of John E. Allen, of Abbeville county, and granddaughter of the late Dr. Charles L. Gaillard, of Anderson county. They have four children. Dr. Orr is president of the Anderson water, light and power company, a very fine plant, and is director of the Anderson cotton mills, vice-president of the Anderson building and loan association, and vice-president of the Farmers' and Merchants' bank. He is also a partner in the Hill-Orr drug company, of Anderson.

Murdoch James Outlaw, a brave Confederate orderly-sergeant in many battles, and often wounded, was born in Chesterfield county, S. C., August 1, 1839, and after receiving an education at Darlington he engaged in farming. He enlisted for the Confederate service November 14, 1861, in Company A, Seventh South Carolina battalion, Hagood's brigade, as a private, and a short time after his enlistment he was appointed orderly-sergeant, which position he held to the end of the war between the States. He was in the following engagements: Pocotaligo and Battery Wagner, S. C.; Walthall's Landing, and Drewry's Bluff, Va.; Fort Fisher, Kinston and Bentonville, N. C. In brief, he participated in all the battles where his fine brigade was engaged, except a few when he was absent on account of his wounds. These bear witness that he was in the thick of many battles.
