Arrest — Another Haul of counterfeit money.
--On Saturday last, a young man calling himself Albert L
Riddell, charged with passing $100 in counterfeit notes of the Bank of South Carolina on
Williams,
Peters & Co., brokers; and another, named
David S. Chilton, charged with having in his possession $1,500 in counterfeit notes of the same description, were arrested in this city, and locked up to a wait an examination.
It appears that
Riddell offered ten $10 notes to
Mr Peters, and received good notes in return, and also left his card, stating that he stopped at the
Exchange Hotel.
The notes were all new, and after they had been more thoroughly examined,
Mr. Peters became convinced that they were not genuine.
He thereupon submitted them to other brokers, who pronounced them counterfeit
Mr. Peters repaired to the
Exchange Hotel, and a message was sent to the station-house, with a view to effect an arrest.
Officer Sent repaired to the hotel, heard the facts related, and finding that the register contained the names of
Riddell and
Chilton in pencil writing, had an interview with
Mr. Peters; then, with
officer Chalkley, returned to the hotel, and found the two just settling their bills to leave.
They were at once taken into custody.
Riddell had none of the counterfeit notes, but upon the person of
Chilton was found a package containing $1.500 in new tens, on the Bank of South Carolina--all exactly like those exchanged at
Williams,
Peters &
Cols. It has since appeared that $20 of the same had been passed on
Mr. John Thompson, proprietor of the hat store adjacent to the
Exchange, and $10 on
Mr. Franklin, optician, for an
opera glass.
Each of the accused had a new pistol, with other articles apparently just purchased, and it is not improbable that the worthless stuff has been extensively circulated in the city.
The foregoing is an outline of the facts as we have heard them.
It is probable that the investigation at the
Mayor's Court this morning may bring to light further developments.
Chilton processes to bail from Liberty, Va, and
Riddell from
Louisville, Ky. They are both young and quite genteel in appearance.
