More powder wasted.
--The Fredericksburg Recorder, of Tuesday, has the following:
‘
We happened to be at the
Creek on Saturday afternoon, when a large steamer, supposed by
Captain Lynch to be the
Northern Light, passed down the river as far as Mary land Point, then rounding to came in very close to the shore; but speedily putting out again, passed to near the
Maryland shore, and fired some four or five shots, which, however, did not reach further than
Simms' Point.
The same steamer, we understand, fired some ten or a dozen shots our batteries again on Sunday evening, but all of them fell short — Our boys on both occasion reserved their fire.
Yesterday morning the enemy's ships, consisting of the
Yankee and
Pawnee, again ventured in, and fired at our batteries.
This
Walker's Battery promptly responded to, and the result was, that after firing some twelve rounds on their part, and drawing seven from us, during which the
Yankee had her wheelhouse stove in, her bow struck, and a shell to burst upon her deck, they concluded to haul off, which, in Yankee parlance, was dons ‘"in good order," ’ and both of them passed out of reach of our batteries over to the
Maryland shore.
