[for the Richmond Dispatch.]
acknowledgment.

Mr. Editor: Allow me to acknowledge through your columns the following patriotic response to your recent appeal in behalf of Springfield Hospital:

Rev. Mr. Brown--Dear Sir:
I send by the Richmond and Danville Railroad a box containing twenty chickens and one containing eight dozen eggs, for the sick soldiers at Springfield Hospital, which I direct to your care.

Very respectfully,

Martha A. Fowles.

Nottoway co., Aug. 29, 1861.
Let the example of this good lady excite others to similar deeds of generosity. Thus they may serve their suffering countrymen, who are willing to sacrifice even life itself for their protection.

Yours, truly,

Alex. G. Brown.
Richmond, September 2, 1861.
