A card.

--By the desire of many of my neighbors and friends of Hanover, to become a candidate for the Legislature. I take this occasion to say that should the good people of the county elect me as their Representative, I pledge myself to discharge the duties pertaining thereto to the best of my ability.

Not deeming it to be in good taste to electioneer for civil offices, now that our beloved country is bleeding at every pore in this most righteous war in defence of our liberties — I shall stay at home and bide the decision of the people I will, however, simply say that I have ever advocated the doctrine of State-rights, believing it to be the -anchor of American liberty the consequence of the ignoring of which is now being demonstrated by the Government at Washington.

E. P. Meredith.
