--We have been aware for some time that our esteemed and highly honored fellow-citizen,
Major-General Twiggs, desired retirement from the active duties of the army which had, at a critical period, been rather forced upon than desired by him, and when his resolution had been taken to make way for younger men for distinction and laurels to win. At length the acceptance of the honored veteran's ation is officially made known through a dispatch from the acting
Secretary of War complied, he never, with the regrets of the
Government at the step taken by the
General, and by a wish that he will retain the command until relieved by
Gen. Mansfield Lored, who will leave
Richmond this day for this command.
We have not time to do more thus announce the important news, and which, although not expected, will be by the public.
