Whiskey and the soldiers.

--Some time ago, talking with an intelligent soldier who had passed many years in India, and had seen some terrible applications of the "cat-o'-nine-tails," we asked ‘"how many of the czars of flogging had anything to do with drink? "’ "Every case," replied the soldier. "I never knew a soldier flogged, except through drink in some way or other, or stealing so as to get drink. Many a time have I had to help roll barrels of grog up the hill to one of the canteens in India, and it was a common joke to say, ‘"Bill, I wonder how many court martials there are inside here!"’
