A most Valuable discovery.

Some excitement prevails in portions of the South consequent upon the discovery of an immense bed of rock salt, affording apparently an inexhaustible supply, at Opelika, Ala. It is stated that the discovery was made by a gentleman who broke a rock which he was using as a hammer. --The rock had such a beautiful, crystallized appearance that he tasted it, out of curiosity, and, to his surprise and delight, found it to be solid rock salt. Such is the abundance in which it is said to exist that the surface of the earth is covered with it. A deep cut through a hill on the railroad has been made, which exposes towering cliffs on either side of pure salt, while the cross-ties are laid on the same substance.

The Governor of South Carolina has received a telegram, offering to contract to supply the State with any amount, delivered at Augusta, at $5 per bushel.
