Situation of affairs.
The altitude of affairs below this city has undergone no material change within the past few days.
As far as any material movements of the two armies have been developed.
It was stated yesterday that the
Yankee forces were making some demonstrations in front of our line of pickets, but nothing to indicate an early attack had occurred.
It is probable that the enemy has received large reinforcements within the past few days, and it may be that the project of reducing
Richmond is not entirely abandoned; but it is scarcely to be presumed that, even with reinforcements, he will take any formidable demonstration for some time As we expressed yesterday, it is not likely that he will be able to perfect the reorganization of his forces at
Berkeley, and when he that point, it will perhaps be with a view to reach some position of greater security, where his army can be put in good condition for active position.
A few days, however, will serve to his purposes and his policy.
