Mayor's Court.
--A large number of cases were called in this Court yesterday; but, as will be seen from the following summary, few of them were disposed of:
‘
Thaddeus A R and
Mrs Mary Hopkins, mother and son, were charged with entering the storehouse of Henry M
Jones, on the 18th inst, and feloniously stealing about one thousand dollars worth of coffee, sugar, soap, soda, and gun caps.
This case was continued from last Monday on account of the absence of an important witness for the
Commonwealth, and was further continued yesterday for the same cause.
The
Mayor deeming
Mrs Hopkins but slightly implicated, according to the testimony of
Jones, accepted bail for her appearance, but committed her son for his appearance.
Jerry Dunnavant and
Lee Whitehurst, charged with stealing a diamond breast pin from Lt Col
James Nelligan, were committed to jail for their appearance before the
Mayor on next Saturday to answer the offence.
In consequence of the protracted continuance of this case, it was announced yesterday that it should be disposed of on Saturday anyhow, as far as His Honor's jurisdiction is concerned.
The case of James R
Shumaker, charged with stealing one horse of the value of $1,000, belonging to some person unknown, was continued till the 9th day of July.
Mrs!
Louisa Nazarine was charged with using threatening language and assaulting
Charles Maurice.
Both of these parties are natives of
France, and it was difficult for any one ignorant of the language to clearly understand their testimony; but, from what could be made out of the evidence,
Maurice and
Mrs Nazarine occupy a house together in the neighborhood of the
Old Market; a mutual dislike exists between them, and whenever they are so unfortunate as to get together a difficulty is sure to ensue.
Maurice claims that
Mrs N curses and abuses him on all occasions, and on Monday morning she gouged him in the eye; while the accused alleges that the reverse has been the case.
The
Mayor was on the eve of requiring both of them to give accuracy, when
Maurice asserted that he could bring to prove what he had said, and the matter was therefore referred over till this morning.
John, slave of
John H. Gentry, and
Edgar, slave of
James A. Scott, were arraigned on the very indefinite charge of ; but as the matter had not been fully worked up, it was continued till the 30th inst. About this case there is some involved, as from repeated application to the parties having it in hand, none of the particulars could be obtained.
Robert, slave of
Mary J. Phillips, and
Daniel, slave of William Court, charged with stealing a piece of bacon from the
Jackson Hospital, were ordered to be whipped.
Similar punishment was inflicted upon Jim, slave of
John Moore, and Mary and
Nancy Lewis, free negroes, charged with receiving stolen money and a watch, the property of
Minerva Jackson, knowing that such was the way in which the articles were obtained.
A fine of twenty dollars was imposed upon
James Simpson, charged with trading with a negro without a written from his master being first obtained.
Two little negro boys, slaves of
Joseph Myers and
E. H. Chalkley charged with throwing stones in the streets, were discharged, as were also a half dozen boys arrested for bathing in public places.
A man named
Samuel W. Crubbs, arrested for wandering about the streets and having no place to stay, was sent to the poor-house, in
Hanover, from institution he has recently absented himself.
