Gibbs, George 1815-1873

Historian; born in Astoria, N. Y., July 17, 1815; was attached to the United States boundary commission for many years; did military duty in Washington during the Civil War; was a member of the New York Historical Society for many years and its secretary for six years. Among his works are Memoirs of the administrations of Washington and John Adams; A dictionary of the Chinese jargon; Ethnology and Philology of America, etc. He died in New Haven, Conn., April 9, 1873.
