Saunders, Alvin 1817-1899

Legislator; born in Fleming county, Ky., July 12, 1817; removed to the present State of Iowa in 1836; delegate to the Iowa constitutional convention in 1846; governor of the Nebraska Territory in 1861-67; and United States Senator from Nebraska in 1877-83. During this period he secured over 600,000 acres of land to his State by the rearrangement of the northern boundary. He died in Omaha, Neb., Nov. 1, 1899.
