Steele, John 1758-1827

Military officer; born in Lancaster, Pa., Aug. 15, 1758; was captain in the Pennsylvania line during the Revolution; wounded at Brandywine; commander of Washington's life-guard in 1780; and assisted in the capture of Cornwallis. He was State Senator after the war, and was a commissioner to settle the Wyoming difficulties; and was also collector of the port of Philadelphia a long time, and general of the Pennsylvania militia. He died in Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 27, 1827.
