Zoologist; born in
Thetford, Vt., Oct. 1, 1866; graduated at the
University of
Michigan in 1889; accompanied the
Steere Scientific Expedition to the
Philippine Islands in 1887-88; conducted a scientific expedition with a single companion to the same islands in 1890-93; and became
Professor of Zoology and curator of the Zoological Museum at the
University of
Michigan in 1895.
He was appointed one of the Unit-
ed States commissioners to the Philippines in January, 1899.
His publications include
The Philippine Islands and their people; and articles on the mammals and birds of the Philippines.
