The Senate met at 12 o'clock M.
Mr. Sparrow introduced a bill to amend the several acts in regard to military storekeepers.
Referred to the Committee on Military Affairs.
Mr. Sparrow offered the following, which was agreed to: ‘
"Resolved, That the Committee on Military Affairs be instructed to inquire into the expediency of increasing the number and rank of officers in the engineer corps of the provisional army." ’
Senate bill to guard against the improper construction of the tax laws by the officers entrusted with the execution of the same, was reported favorably by the Judiciary Committee, and its consideration was postponed till Monday.
A communication from the Secretary of the Treasury, recommending that the funds of the old issue deposited by postmasters with Government depositaries be authorized to be appropriated by the Post-office Department, was referred to the Finance Committee.
On motion, by Mr. Semmes, the Senate resolved into secret session.
